If you’re undergoing Invisalign treatment, you’re probably greatly enjoying the convenience and flexibility that accompanies this remarkable orthodontic solution! However, if you’ve got an upcoming trip or vacation planned, you may be wondering if your travels might impact your treatment’s progress. Fortunately, if you plan carefully and do things correctly, you won’t have a thing to worry about concerning your aligners! Here are a few must-know tips from your orthodontist that’ll help you to enjoy yourself without fear of delaying your Invisalign journey!

Tip #1: Pack Everything You’ll Need

You likely already have an orthodontic kit containing Invisalign-related supplies; you’ll want to be sure to pack it as well as anything else you might need. Your toothbrush, toothpaste, floss, and mouthwash are all critical for maintaining your oral health away from home. However, you also want to ensure that you’ve grabbed everything you need for your aligners, including their storage case, and if necessary, your next set or an extra set of trays. If you’re traveling by plane, include these essentials in your carry-on bag so they’re less likely to become lost.

Tip #2: Keep Up with Your Hygiene Routine

Being on vacation does not exempt you from your oral hygiene routine and Invisalign guidelines! You should continue to brush, floss and rinse after each meal, and be sure that you’re keeping tabs on your trays and keeping them clean when they aren’t being worn for the required 22 hours per day.

Tip #3: Stay Hydrated, but Be Mindful of Tap Water

There’s no doubt that water is the absolute best beverage for your oral health, as it encourages the flow of saliva and even helps to rinse away excess food debris from inside your mouth. Many local tap water sources also contain fluoride, a naturally occurring mineral with awesome oral health benefits. However, you should always double-check that the water supply where you’re staying is safe to drink and okay to use for brushing your teeth. When in doubt, use bottled water.

Tip #4: Give Your Orthodontist a Head’s-Up

It never hurts to schedule a visit with your provider before an extended trip—one final checkup can ensure that your treatment is going as planned, and if any necessary adjustments or new trays are required, it can be handled before you leave. Knowing that your treatment is still right on track as you leave can give you the peace of mind you need to fully enjoy your travels!
