Braces shouldn’t hold your teen—or you—back from staying active and participating in all kinds of fun sports and outdoor games. No matter the sport or activity, braces shouldn’t prevent participation; however, it’s normal to still be concerned about injury or possible damage to the orthodontic appliances during intense physical activity. Thankfully, with a few simple precautions, your teen can protect their braces and keep their treatment on track. Here’s what you need to know.
Tip #1. Wear a Mouthguard
The most important step is wearing a properly fitted mouthguard designed for patients with braces. Unlike standard mouthguards, orthodontic ones are made to fit comfortably over brackets and wires, protecting both the appliance as well as the soft tissues of the mouth. They cushion impact and reduce the risk of broken brackets, bent wires, or lip injuries. Don’t hesitate to ask your teen’s orthodontist about picking one of these useful devices up!
Tip #2. Be Mindful of High-Risk Snacks
Avoid hard or sticky snacks like popcorn, sports drinks with ice, or chewy protein bars right before a game or practice—or even afterwards when celebrating a victory! These can damage brackets and wires, and the last thing you want is an emergency visit for what would’ve otherwise been an avoidable mishap.
Tip #3. Have a Braces Kit Ready to Go
A small kit with orthodontic wax, floss picks, and a travel toothbrush can help your teen (or adult athlete) handle any discomfort or food stuck in braces away from home or on the sidelines. If a wire gets bent, or a bracket becomes loose or damaged, orthodontic wax can be a temporary fix until an appointment. Likewise, you can also keep over-the-counter pain relievers in this kit for days when any braces-related soreness might be distracting.
Remember, braces are an investment in a healthier, more confident smile. With the right preparation and gear, athletes of all ages can protect their investment while staying in the game!
